teamE4E 89: RUN/WALK METHOD | ZONE 2 TRAINING | 80/20 RULE

October 3, 2017
00:0000:00

THE GROUP WAS ASKED WHAT THE CONCEPT OF THE WEEK SHOULD BE TONIGHT, AND AS MUCH AS WE WANTED TO DELVE INTO THE SHAVING CONCEPT (YOU KNOW IT'LL BE COMING THOUGH), KAREN CLARKE POSED THE CONCEPT OF RUN/WALK METHOD, AND SINCE IT DOVETAILED INTO THE PLAN TALKING POINTS THIS WEEK WE WENT WITH THAT ONE.

RUN/WALK METHOD

  • Continuous use of a muscle will result in quicker fatigue
  • The longer the run segment, the more fatigue
  • Run Walk Run is a form of interval training
  • Conservation of resources
  • Quicker recovery
  • Less stress on the “weak links”
  • Reduce core body temperature

ZONE 2 TRAINING

USING THE 80/20 RULE

teamE4E 86: FIT AND UNHEALTHY | OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE WEIGHT | BODY FAT PERCENTAGES

September 14, 2017
00:0000:00

#TEAME4E CONCEPT OF THE WEEK IS "SWOLF"

TAKING A DIVE INTO THE SUBJECT OF WHAT IT MEANS TO BE FIT AND HEALTHY, AND IF THE TWO TERMS ARE MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE. CAN YOU BE A FIT PERSON, ABLE TO PERFORM THE PHYSICAL TASK IN FRONT OF YOU, BUT STILL BE UNHEALTHY?

THIS LEADS TO A DISCUSSION ABOUT BODY WEIGHT IN OF ITSELF, AND WHETHER THERE IS AN "OPTIMAL WEIGHT" FOR PERFORMANCE IN CERTAIN RACES AND TRAINING. IF THERE IS ONE, HOW CAN YOU DETERMINE YOUR OWN IDEAL WEIGHT?

NOTE: IT WAS REALIZED AFTER THE SHOW POSTED THAT I WAS USING THE TERM "METABOLIC SYNDROM" WHEN I ACTUALLY MEANT "ADRENAL FATIGUE". TOTAL MY (JOHN) ERROR.

THE MAIN COMPONENTS OF LOWER BODY FAT PERCENTAGE

  1. BUILD MUSCLE
  2. NUTRITION
  3. HEART RATE
  4. SLEEP
  5. THE MIND

teamE4E 82: Waisting Food | Periodized Carb Intake | Calorie Counting

August 3, 2017
00:0000:00

Can you sense a theme in the title?

John and Rob discuss training in a fasted state, how that can help endurance, and some of the methods to use. They also delve a bit into Calorie Counting as it pertains to Weight Loss.

Remember to check out the Squad Locker gear site and get your order in for this period. It ends in 4 days. https://teamlocker.squadlocker.com/#/lockers/63803?_k=7h7hjs

E80: Race Day Nutrition Mistakes | Hill Training in a Flat Area | Does Coaching Make a Difference?

July 20, 2017
00:0000:00

How many of these mistakes have we all made on race day, even though we know better, and how can you train for hills and mountains if you live in an area (like John does) with neither of them?

Tune in this week to find out to get our take on these issues, and probably some other random thoughts thrown in for good measure.

E77: Social Support | Weight Loss | Veganism | Ethics | GFit

June 28, 2017
00:0000:00

Randy is back and the show starts off with a discussion about his weight loss using a medication and delves into the importance of family support, veganism, ethical dilemmas, and some discussion about the racing for the rest of the year and next.

E75: Functional Fitness vs. Crossfit | The Difference in Trails | Negativity vs. Reality | Guest Co-Host Meaghan Nana-Sinkam

June 13, 2017
00:0000:00

Meaghan Nana-Sinkam joins John as a guest co-host this week to talk about functional fitness and how is it different or similar to Crossfit.

They also discuss the two races John has been in since the last show (Clermont Series 5K and the Picnic Island Adventure Run)

How the Shakeology shakes are working as far as energy and weight loss

A bit more about Infinitus. Are calling trails in Florida and trails in Vermont the same name making any sense. The fine line between negativity and reality.

Some discussion about the direction Meaghan has been going in her training, her accidental acquiring of a coach, and trying to PR a mile. Some noticing of the sentiment in the recreational runner community that there's more respect the longer you run and some disdain for short races. We both challenge that. Do people think that Usain Bolt is less deserving of respect than Meb? Or what he does is easier than what Meb does?

E73: Weight Loss Supplements | Phentermine | When Diet and Exercise is not Enough | Effect on Endurance Training

May 17, 2017
00:0000:00

Phentermine was in the news a few years ago but is still being used by doctors to help patients get a handle on weight loss issues when diet and exercise have not proved to be enough. Randy is currently on this medication and he will share his thoughts, how it is affecting him, and any concerns he had going into the program. More discussion on weight loss help in the form of supplementation, meal replacement, or surgery, ensues after that with the underlying question of "when does it become time to seek medical intervention?". What role does it play while training for endurance events?

00:0000:00

Randy is back this week and joins John to talk about the importance of sleep, how it can affect your weight loss and training, and ways to fix and adapt to a natural circadian rhythm. The ongoing drama of John vs. Feet is also discussed, and is becoming quite the issue as the 100 mile run gets closer and closer.

This week's music is the classic "Me and Julio" by Paul Simon and ends with "I'm Alive" by Mr. Aday (Meatloaf).

February 15, 2017
00:0000:00

A number of great posts and emails have been received recently that have let Randy and John know that what they set out to do, the core meaning of the group, has started to manifest in listeners and readers. It was both eye opening and relative. The show is, at it's base level, about anf for you, so we are glad it comes across.

We get into the meat of a few posts from Brent and Tyler, and some follow-up responses from listener Roxanne. Keep those posts and emails coming!

This is CLASSIC ROCK week with tunes from Nazareth (Hair of the Dog) and Ted Nugent (Good Friends and a Bottle of Wine)

February 1, 2017
00:0000:00

After a week off the guys are back with another information loaded episode, ranging from types of DNF's, the rules of weight loss during the off season, and some talk about running form.

E53: Christmas Reading List | Domino Foods | The Road to No

December 7, 2016
00:0000:00

Christmas is coming (Santa!!!) and after john regales you with his tale from a Twilight 5K and following Therapy, the guys go through some of their picks for "must reads" during the holdiay season. If you have more to add, please let them know. They are very open minded. John also talks some about Domino Foods and the movie "Race" currently on HBO.

The books discussed:

Tools of Titans by Tim Ferriss, Without Limits by Chrissie Wellington, Triathlon 2.0 by Jim Vance, Beyond Training by Ben Greenfield, Run Walk Method by Jeff Galloway, Run Less Run Faster by Runners World, 80/20 Running by Matt Fitzgerald, and Endurance Sports Nutrition by Suzanne Eberle

In this week's music .... "Rev it Up and Go Go" by Jesse James Dupree and Dixie, Inc .... just for the KISS reference, and "Joes Garage" by Frank Zappa.

E52: Space Coast Half Marathon | No Race Weight Loss | Books and Films

December 2, 2016
00:0000:00

Happy Anniversary!! The Fat Slow Triathlete Show is now 1 year old and we are still going strong. This week we talk about John making it through the Space Coast Half Marathon after visiting both a sports medicine doctor and a physical therapist. It wasn't pretty but he finished the race, and 2:00 faster than last year, so we call that in FST World a "win".

Some discussion about losing weight and why it is easier to do it if training less than you would for a race.

John is also reading a book that may be of interest to you athletes trying to find the mental strength to get through these events (The Tao of Running by Gary Dudney) and he watched two great, and scary, documentaries on the Barkley Marathon and Patriots Day, about the Boston Marathon bombing.

This week's music is "Easy Street" by the Collapsable Hearts Band (TWD fans will know it well) and "Rock and Roll" by who else??

E47: Diet Myths Revisited | Dental Chair Horror

October 26, 2016
00:0000:00

Life lessons and exploring some diet myths courtesy of Runners World and SweatRx .... these are always fun and worthy of discussion, especially since John and Randy don't always agree.

This week's music is relevant for both the discussion of dentists, diets, and Halloween. Alice Cooper's "Unfinished Sweet" from 1974, and White Lion's "When the Children Cry" so Randy can relive his slow dancing days in 1987.

E46: Why The Name Fat Slow Triathlete | Pathetic Triathlete Group | My Toe!!

October 19, 2016
00:0000:00
John and Randy hot the airwaves once again to talk about the origin of the Fat Slow Triathlete name and why it does not mean what you might think it means, the Pathetic Triathletes Facebook group's issue with fat shaming and the DNF vs. Finisher discussion, dealing with the jerks of the sport, a paleo recipe, and the forthcoming loss of a big toe nail.

Music this week are a couple of hidden gems by Meatloaf ... "Do It" from the LP "Couldn't Have Said it Better", and "Alive" from "Bat Out Of Hell III : The Monster is Loose"

E42 - Coaching Session | Meghan Fanning | Jennifer Cultrera

September 21, 2016
00:0000:00
Both John and Randy were unable to record a new show this week, so instead we dug up one from the FST Experiment on Back of Pack Endurance while Andrew Weaver was doing his stage show. This was John talking with Jennifer and Meghan during an actual coaching session, which we though would make an interesting conversation. Hopefully it holds up.

This Week's Music is 80's themed - "1985" by Bowling for Soup, and a new song from an 80's icon, "Man Enough" from Def Leppard

E40 - Training for Weight Loss | Stress | EPOC |

September 8, 2016
00:0000:00
John and Randy, and a listener here and there, are gaining weight while training. The discussion tonight revolves around why that happens, what can be the cause, and how to reverse the trend. An exploration of the question about whether being overweight and active is better than being thin and inactive, and dealing with stress and the tendency to over eat.

Tonight's music is brought to you by:

The Beastie Boy with "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" because it still ROCKS and Hanson with "MMMBop" because John thought it was a funny thing to put in there.
